Swing Dirty Dirty/Love & Affection/Bank Vault | CD EP | $4.99
Studio Confessions, 2003
Just 3 tracks – but a heck of a great release from Peven Everett ! “Swing Dirty Dirty” is a snapping little groover – beats kicking along at the bottom, in a step/swing sort of feel, with Peven vocalizing over the top in a wonderfully mellow way. He really reaches deeply on the track – pushing his vocals farther than before, and really going for a classic sort of feel! “Love & Affection” has a bit more beats and electronics – abstract at the start, but solidly soulful with some great lyrics that are really spontaneous and heartfelt! And “Bank Vault” rounds up the set with a cool mellow feel – acoustic guitar over gentle rhythms, swaying back and forth under the guidance of Peven ’s magnificent voice! All tracks are not on any other LP by him – and this nicely-priced CD is a great sampling of his many many talents!
Upper Esh – Star Studded | CD | $13.99
Satellite Soundscape, 2003
A wicked blend of hip hop and underground soul from Peven Everett and Upper Esh – warm Peven -styled beats and keys underneath, and rhymes by Asian A and Pretty Toan over the top! If you dig Peven ’s self-produced albums, you’ll find plenty in here to like – as a lot of the tracks have that sweet bubbling homemade soul sound that’s one of the best aspects of Peven ’s work. And while the rhymes are sometimes a bit stiff, the album’s really more of a soul set than a hip hop one – with lots of sung choruses that make the tracks come off a lot more like Peven ’s other tunes than anything else. Titles include “Actin Fake”, “Right Turn”, “Playin Games Wit It”, “We Gotcha Goin”, “Long Road”, “Calm Down”, “Girl You Should Come Through”, and “Catch Me On The Way Up”.
My Brazil | CD | $6.99
Studio Confessions, 2003
A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The “My Brazil” reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D’Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that’s immediately infectious. The CD’s only got 5 tracks – priced nice and cheap – but every track’s a winner, and the album’s a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! Titles include “Colored Culture”, “Brazilian Lovers”, “Innocense”, “One Kiss”, and “The One I Want”.
Speed Of Light | CD | $13.99
Studio Confessions, 2002
The CD is a brilliant mix of soul, jazz, house, and touches of Afro-centric rhythms – crafted in a swirling mix that dips back 30 years into the history of soul, yet still points the way towards a richly positive future – sounding a heck of a lot more “real” than just about anyone else we can think of on the market today, and showing Everett as a burgeoning soul genius – on a par with D’Angelo, Norman Harris, Donnie Hathway, and, dare we say it, Marvin Gaye. Summer Solstace | CD | $13.99
Genius work from Peven Everett – one of the greatest talents of the soul underground! Apart from the mis-spelled title, the album’s perfect all the way through – a sublime blend of house beats, jazz riffing, and Peven ’s incredible soul vocals – a tremendous style that calls to mind Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, D’Angelo, and a host of other classic vocalists that Peven easily matches on the set! The tunes have a more percussive feel than some of his other work – lots of tribal beats and long rhythmic progressions – traces of house music, to be sure, but also a primal approach that really gets at the heart of the tunes! Titles include “Do You Think About Me”, “Colored Culture”, “To Sooth A Savage”, “Family Now”, “Asteroid Theater”, “Ghana Red”, and “The Spirit In The Drum”. And like almost all the Peven CDs we carry, this one’s hand-made, and hand-packaged by the artist himself – a CDR delivered to you, almost as a personal present!
