Studio Confessions – ABB 2002
The first full and official album from Peven Everett – a professional release that pulls together the strands from his underground, self-released albums of the past few years! After knocking around as a young up and comer on the east coast scene, Peven went underground in Chicago a while back, and only issued titles in handmade format, on CD-R releases with little or no artwork. This album’s the first one that he’s issued with professional packaging, formatting, and recording quality – and it’s the culmination of a number of years of woodshedding in the studio. The set’s great – and builds off of tracks that Peven recorded for his previous self-issued Speed Of Light CD, plus new tracks – all produced and presented to perfection, in a setting that’s sure to rise Peven’s star as much as we’ve been hoping. The whole thing’s wonderful – smooth, soulful, and classic – in a mode that we haven’t heard since D’Angelo or Omar first came onto the scene. (From the NuSoul CD page.)

Testin’ Me (voc, inst)/One More Time – ABB Soul, 2002
An amazing soul single from Peven Everett – soon to be a household name and a regular visitor to your soundsystem! “Testin Me” is wonderful – a slow bubbling groovier with amazing vocals, warm keyboards, and a solid soulful sound that’s all classic all the way through! “One More Time” continues that feel tremendously – bubbling congas with keys, sounding like a lost gem from William De Vaughan from the 70s! Soul Tempura – Good Lovin’/Runaround Diaspora (UK), 2002
Wonderfully soulful work from Peven Everett – one of his few releases on vinyl, and a massively beautiful single featuring two of his best tracks! “Good Lovin” is Peven at his soaring righteous best – a slice of D’Angelo, Donny Hathaway, and Lonnie Liston Smith – wrapped up in Peven’s unique talent, and headed to the heavens with a killer groove! “Runaround” is equally great – a bit more laidback, but with a wonderful rhythm that mixes warm keyboards and acoustic percussion, layered with Peven’s great vocals! . Summer Solstice Studio Confessions, 2003
Apart from the miss-spelled title, the album’s perfect all the way through – a sublime blend of house beats, jazz riffing, and Peven’s incredible soul vocals – a tremendous style that calls to mind Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, D’Angelo, and a host of other classic vocalists that Peven easily matches on the set! The tunes have a more percussive feel than some of his other work – lots of tribal beats and long rhythmic progressions – traces of house music, to be sure, but also a primal approach that really gets at the heart of the tunes! .
